Learn about the complex origin of a simple game.
Rock, paper, scissors is an easy game that nearly everyone knows how to play. In the game, at least two people make hand gestures that represent rock, paper, or scissors at the same time. The rules are simple: Rock crushes scissors, paper covers rock, and scissors cut paper. However, most people don’t know where the game came from.
The earliest record of a similar game appeared in an ancient Chinese book more than 2,000 years ago. In that game, the hand gestures represented a bird, a snake, and a human. From China, the game spread to Japan, where, in the 17th century, it evolved into another game called janken. This game used the familiar modern form of the hand shapes for rock, paper, and scissors.
Throughout the 20th century, the game started to spread across regions outside Japan. This was mainly due to Japan’s increased contact with Western countries. During the 1920s and the 1930s, rock, paper, scissors was introduced to European countries and the United States. In 1927, a French children’s magazine wrote about the game in detail. Five years later, The New York Times wrote an article about the rules of the game for American readers. Since then, rock, paper, scissors has been widely used by people around the world to solve arguments or just to pass the time.
